In Ohio 1942, a cash-strapped farmer is about to be foreclosed on by an unscrupulous banker and must believe his young son has seen a dolphin in their small farm lake or lose everything he holds most dear.

"A Dolphin in our Lake" is set on a small farm in Ohio in 1942. Tom Beaumont shares the farm with his wife, Samantha, and their two children, 11 year-old son, Bobby, and his feisty 7 year-old sister, Patch. Tom is worried about the bank's threat of foreclosure because of his inability to harvest his corn, as his old tractor is broken beyond repair. Bobby has leukemia, but in typical Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn fashion, it does not stop him from going fishing with his best friend, Hank, and continually outsmarting the local bullies. Even though Bobby's grandpa has just died, the old man whispered he would ask God to send a dolphin to help them. Together with his son's failing health and the potential loss of the family farm, Tom is ready to give up. Then Bobby tells him he has seen a dolphin in their small freshwater lake and wants to know if it's Grandpa's dolphin. Patch and Samantha believe him but Tom is not convinced, reasoning it is a symptom of Bobby's worsening health. Samantha faces their respective hardships with her head held high, trusting things will get better. But, in the depths of despair, Tom does not share her optimism and must overcome his lack of faith to believe in a miracle that may just be swimming in the lake in his own front yard.—Rosemary Marks
