Synopsis

AN INTIMATE DANCE: Dancers explore the art and science of connection

In the journey from birth to adulthood, our connection to our animal mind-body has been interrupted.

In the feature documentary AN INTIMATE DANCE, dancers explore the art and science of connection. The dance practice, Contact Improvisation with its mindful play, provides a rare opportunity to explore and re-engage instinct, intuition and connection.

The documentary takes viewers inside the hidden world of Contact Improvisation. Contact is a dance form originating in the 1970s and practiced by thousands of dancers worldwide. We follow three characters on a journey of self discovery and transformation through dance.

What can Contact tell us about what it means to be alive in our bodies?

Although Contact is often called an art-sport because of its combination of artistic expression and deep and often highly kinetic engagement of the animal body-mind, it also engages the personal history written in our cellular memory. Contact's play and vulnerability can challenge preconceived notions of gender, sexuality, body image, and even ideas about where our boundaries begin and end.

What can Contact tell us about what it means to be human?

Through the dancers' journeys, meetings with Contact's founder and devotees, as well as an exploration of the underlying psychology and neuroscience, we come to see that Contact is not just a dance. It suggests a different way of living mindful, connected, generous, and in touch.
