Vincent Capodanno, the son of Italian immigrants, serves as a Maryknoll missionary in Asia following the communist takeover, then joins the US Navy during the height of the Vietnam buildup. In one of the fiercest battles of the war, Operation Swift, September 4, 1967, he is fatally wounded while tending fallen marines.
