The life of Candy, a little orphan girl, and her friends.
A loose adaptation of a 1975 novel by Kyoko Mizuki. The setting is the early 20th century. Candy is an American orphan girl, raised in an orphanage near Lake Michigan. At the age of 12, Candy is informally hired by the Leagan family. They want Candy to serve as a lady's companion for the young Eliza Leagan, though they tend to mistreat Candy. When Candy and Eliza develop romantic feelings for the same boy, Eliza starts bullying Candy. Candy is eventually framed for stealing, but she is soon adopted by the wealthy William Ardlay (who is related to two of Candy's close friends). Candy eventually pursues a career as a nurse, and she has interactions with several different love interests.—Dimos I

Based on the Japanese animation of the same title. Candy's best friend, Annie is adopted away from their orphanage. Candy writes letters and waits 7 years for Annie to reply. When she finally does, it is only to tell Candy to stop contacting her as she does not want to remember her time as an orphan. Candy is eventually made a ward of a wealthy businessman. She falls in love with a boy her age, but he is sickly and soon dies. Candy is enrolled in a school run at a convent, but she finds Annie there waiting to torment her—Anonymous
