When a trade unionist is murdered in broad daylight, the suspects rounded up include Sofianos, who doggedly maintains his innocence. When a minister visits his cell, he tricks his warders and takes the man hostage, threatening to kill him.

It is 1936 in Greece, shortly before the Metaxas' dictatorship. A former drug trafficker and police informer, Sofianos, is in prison because of the assassination of a trade unionist during a rally. A conservative politician, Kriezis, with whom Sofianos had a homosexual relationship, visits him in prison. Using a smuggled gun Sofianos manages to take him hostage in his cell and blackmails the police in order to be released. The government is at a dead end and the country finds itself in a crisis. If they free Kriezis, they will lose the support of the democrats, if they don't, they will lose the support of the conservatives. Being incapable of dealing with the situation, the government decide to kill Sofianos. First, they attempt clumsily to poison him and then they hire a sniper to shoot him.—Alkistis Zografou

With the Metaxas regime barely hanging on to power thanks to an uneasy compromise between the right-wing and the centrist forces, and against the backdrop of the 1936 elections, Sofianos, an ex-police informer who has fallen into disfavour, is arrested and charged with the murder of a trade unionist at a workers' rally. As Sofianos desperately tries to prove his innocence, one day, he is visited in prison by a Conservative Member of Parliament, and as one thing leads to another, he uses a smuggled gun to take the politician hostage. Now, with Sofianos threatening to kill him unless he is released, the Metaxas regime is faced with a grave dilemma: If they allow the assassination of the MP, they will lose right-wing support, but if they accept Sofianos' blackmail and set him free, they will lose the support of the centrists.—Nick Riganas
