The teenage son of the king and queen of Auradon offers the trouble-making children of villains a chance to attend prep school in the kingdom.
Ben, son of Belle and the once selfish Beast, is poised to become next on the throne, however he is not ready and allows the villain kids from the Isle of the Lost to attend Auradon Prep. From there, things go way down hill.
Twenty years after Belle and Beast marry and become king and queen, they establish the United States of Auradon, creating a prosperous new nation from the surrounding kingdoms, and banish the villains to the Isle of the Lost, a slum surrounded by a barrier where magic is suspended. Their son, Ben, announces that his first proclamation is to give four selected children from the Isle of the Lost the chance to live in Auradon, away from the influence of their villainous parents: Carlos, son of Cruella DE Vil; Jay, son of Jafar; Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen; and Mal, daughter of Maleficent. On the island, Maleficent instructs the quartet to steal the Fairy Godmother's magic wand to release the barrier so she can take over Auradon..
Soon-to-be King Ben, son of Beauty and the Beast, lives in Auradon, a place where the fairy tale heroes live. He decides to allow four Villain Kids from the Isle of The Lost, a run down place where fairy tale villains were banished, come to Auradon. They are: Mal, daughter of Maleficent, Carlos, son of Cruella De'Vil, Jay, son of Jafar, and Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen. Their parents want them to steal Fairy Godmother's wand so they can break the Isles barrier. But will they succeed?
Belle (Keegan Connor Tracy) and Beast (Dan Payne) marry and become king and queen, they establish the United States of Auradon, creating a prosperous new nation from the surrounding kingdoms, and banish the villains to the Isle of the Lost, a slum surrounded by a barrier where magic is suspended. The Isle of the Lost has no magic, no internet, and the only bridge connecting to the mainland is destroyed, so there is no way out.
Now, twenty years later, their son, Ben (who has recently turned 16), will soon be crowned king. Ben (Mitchell Hope) announces that his first proclamation is to give four selected children from the Isle of the Lost the chance to live in Auradon, away from the influence of their villainous parents, despite his father's protests. Beast says that the parents are guilty of unspeakable crimes and is particularly livid with Maleficent. Ben argues that the kids are innocent and deserve a shot at a normal life.
The selected 4 are Carlos (Cameron Boyce) son of Cruella De Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson) (from One Hundred and One Dalmatians); Jay (Booboo Stewart) son of Jafar (Maz Jobrani) (From Aladin); Evie (Sofia Carson) daughter of the Evil Queen (Kathy Najimy) (from Snow white); and Mal (Dove Cameron) daughter of Maleficent (Kristin Chenoweth) (Sleeping Beauty). On the island, Maleficent instructs the quartet to steal the Fairy Godmother's magic wand to release the barrier so she can take over Auradon. Maleficent says that with her staff and the wand, she will be able to bend the forces of both good and evil to her will.
Mal is angry at being forcibly sent to a boarding school full of prissy Pink Princesses. Maleficent convinces the other parents by saying that this is their chance to get off the Island. Maleficent says that with the barrier destroyed, they can finally have their revenge on the people responsible for their current condition. Evil Queen gives Evie the magic mirror to help locate the magic wand. Maleficent gives her book of spells to Mal as it would work in Auradon.
Traveling to Auradon Prep (the boarding school), the four meet Ben and his self-proclaimed girlfriend Audrey (Sarah Jeffery), daughter of Princess Aurora. Evie tries to make a move on Ben but is immediately pushed back by Audrey. Mal blames Audrey's Grandmother for inviting the whole world except Maleficent to Audrey's christening. This led to Maleficent's curse on Aurora ("Before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a sleep like death! A sleep from which she will *never* awaken!")
They also meet the Fairy Godmother (Melanie Paxson) (from Cinderella), the school's headmistress. Evie uses her mother's pocket-sized magic mirror to locate the wand in a nearby museum, and Mal uses her mother's spinning wheel from the museum to put the security guard to sleep, but they fail to steal the wand due to a barrier around it. As soon as they try to breach the barrier, it sets off an alarm, forcing the kids to retreat back to their dorm. The 4 kids start to be affected by the goodness around the town, but still have a sense of loyalty to their parents. Ben assigns Doug (Dopey's son) to show the class schedules to the new joiners and to show them around the rest of the dorms. The 4 are made to take an introductory class on "Remedial Goodness 101".
After learning that the Fairy Godmother will use the wand at Ben's coronation, the four wait it out by attending classes, but start to fit in with the students. Jay is recruited into the school's "tourney" team (a sport similar to field hockey and lacrosse), while Carlos overcomes his fear of dogs by befriending the school's dog, Dude. Carlos realizes that everything his mother told him about dogs is wrong.
Evie, though intelligent, acts vain to impress Chad (Jedidiah Goodacre), Cinderella's son, but ends up doing his homework for him. Doug (Zachary Gibson) encourages her not to pander to others and be herself.Meanwhile Ben encourages Mal to bring her graffiti talent to art class.
Mal becomes popular, using Maleficent's spell book to improve the looks of Jane (Brenna D'Amico) and Lonnie (Dianne Doan), the daughters of the Fairy Godmother and Mulan, respectively. Mal goads Jane into pressurizing the Fairy Godmother to use her wand to make Jane beautiful. Mal says that the Fairy Godmother used the wand on Cinderella, who wasn't even her daughter. Jane says that the Fairy Godmother believes that the real magic is in knowledge of science and history and not magic.
Learning that Ben's "girlfriend" will be seated close to the wand during the coronation, which is used during the ceremony, Mal bakes a cookie laced with a love potion (she needed a genuine tear of sadness which she gets from Lonnie who cries when she hears that the villain kids have never had a chocolate chip cookies and perhaps their parents don't love them as much) and gives it to Ben, who falls madly in love with her, much to his friends' shock.Audrey responds by making Chad her boyfriend and declares that she is going to the Coronation with him. Ben is ecstatic and invites Mal to the Coronation as his date.Jay wins the Lacrosse tournament for the school and is credited as the most valuable player. Jay basks in the adulation from the entire school.
Evie realizes that Chad is simply using her for his own purposes and decides to listen to Doug. She focuses on her studies and improves her grades. Ben asks Mal out on a date, and Evie helps Mal with her make-up. Maleficent never taught Mal to do make-up, so she considers Evie to be her sister. Mal likes that with make-up and a wardrobe change she looks really pretty.
On a date with Ben, Mal becomes conflicted with her inner goodness and desire to please her mother, unsure of how to react to Ben's feelings towards her. Ben tells Mal that they are not like their parents and can choose whom they want to be. Ben goes for a swim in the Enchanted Lake. Mal thinks that Ben is drowning and jumps into the water to save him even though she does not know how to swim herself. Ben ends up saving Mal and bringing her back to dry land.Ben tells Mal that he loves her, but she cannot bring herself to reciprocate those feelings.
During the school's family day, the villains' children are ostracized after an encounter with Audrey's grandmother, Queen Leah (Judith Maxie) (Audrey's Grandmother), saying Maleficent's curse was the reason she missed Aurora's childhood and she was raised by fairies, prompting an argument that drives Mal to end the beauty spell she used on Jane after Jane taunts Mal that Ben will never make a villain his Queen. While Ben tries to reassure them that everything will be okay after the coronation, Doug tries to remain friendly towards Evie, but Chad forces him to distance himself from her.Mal is now completely determined to steal the magic wand and to destroy the pretty little Kingdom of Auradon.
At Ben's coronation, Mal gives him a cupcake containing the love spell's antidote, believing it is unnecessary to keep him under the spell. It turns out, per Ben's admission, that he was already freed of the spell since their date when he went swimming in the Enchanted Lake, believing that Mal only did it because she really liked him. However, much to Mal's surprise it turns out Ben has had feelings for her all along.
During Ben's crowning, a disillusioned Jane grabs the wand from her mother, wanting to improve her beauty, only for her to accidentally destroy the Isle's barrier. Mal takes the wand from Jane, but torn over what to do, is encouraged by Ben to make her own choice rather than follow Maleficent's path. Mal recognizes that she and her friends found happiness in Auradon and they choose to be good.
Maleficent crashes the ceremony, freezing everyone except herself and the four children. When they defy her, Maleficent transforms into a dragon. Mal and her friends use a counter-spell, turning Maleficent into a lizard based on the amount of love in her heart. Mal returns the Fairy Godmother her wand as she unfreezes everyone and tells her not to be hard on Jane.
While the villains watch the celebration from afar, Auradon Prep's students party through the night. Mal's eyes turn green as she addresses the audience, telling them the story is not over yet. Ben and Mal end up kissing.
