Dolly Parton's Mountain Magic Christmas follows Parton's desire to uplift an exhausted world's spirits by sharing the unique "mountain magic" she has always found in and around Dollywood at Christmas. Throughout the movie's production numbers and rehearsal chaos, Parton finds herself taking a private journey into her past, guided by the mysterious appearances of her personal Three Wise Mountain Men. When it's time for her big special to air, a renewed and inspired Dolly goes rogue and shows the world that the real magic of Christmas lies in the hearts of the children we all once were, the realization that Christmas is about the people we share it with, and how her faith remains the common thread between Christmases past, present, and future.—NBC Television
Dolly performs her signature song "I Will Always Love You" in concert. She leaves the stage but the crowd desperately wants an encore. So she sings "9 to 5" as well.
Dolly is excited to see snow in Tahoe months before it should be snowing, so she calls and wakes up her producer Sam and says she should do a Christmas special.
NBC executive Susan is excited about the idea.
Dolly sings a pleasant song in a meadow surrounded by mountains.
Back at Dollywood, people are excited about Christmas and already dressed for it, and there is just enough time to plan the special. The choreographer arrives with her assistant Jasmine. Dolly announces that Christmas is something to be excited about because Jesus is born. The cast sings "Go, Tell It on the Mountain" and "He's Alive".
Preparations are under way when the choreographer gets an offer to direct The Rockettes. Dolly insists she take the job, despite the advice of everyone else not to let her go.
Jimmy Fallon arrives and instead of a rehearsal, those in charge want to film their rock and roll number, where they are dressed like it is the 50s and eating in a diner.
During a rehearsal, Jasmine is acting like the director and she thinks the show could be much better. She gets in an argument with Sam and the others which leads to cursing. Dolly comes backstage and says Satan is causing these problems and they have to get rid of him.
In a fantasy sequence Dolly and a choir sing "Go to Hell" and Satan appears but is soon banished to where he came from.
Back in the real world, Dolly needs to get away and she visits a grist mill that was a favorite place for her to go as a child and is one of the Dollywood attractions. Willie Nelson appears by magic and has a conversation with Dolly and they sing together. Willie hands Dolly a folded sheet of paper which has all the details about her desires as a child. Dolly's grandnephew Liam, who is visiting, shows up and sees Dolly talking to no one. Willie disappears.
Jasmine continues to get in disagreements with the others in charge. As a foster child growing up, she didn't have a real family and she dreamed of being in charge of a major event like the Macy's Parade. She is being told that's not what this is and she needs to stop treating it that way.
Dolly performs as The Book Lady for a class of young children taught by Miss Moody, who was her teacher in the TV movies about her life. She also performs on stage with Jimmie Allen.
When Dolly needs to get away from all the drama again, a steam train mysteriously appears at another one of the Dollywood attractions. It is being driven by Billy Ray Cyrus, who offers advice, performs, and hands Dolly that folded sheet of paper. Liam shows up and can't see anyone. Billy Ray disappears.
Another time Dolly goes in a church where she is visited by Zach Williams, who sings a praise and worship song with Dolly and hands her that folded sheet of paper. Once again, Liam can't see anyone with Dolly and Zach disappears.
Miley Cyrus shows up to perform with her godmother (or "fairy godmother" as she calls Dolly). There is also a musical number with children whose parents interfere thinking their child should be featured more.
Jasmine finally agrees to not be so pushy. Sam invites her to spend Christmas with his family.
Dolly also performs with two of her sisters, and then with the entire family.
It is almost time for the show to start. A crew member is handed a message and he goes in the back. Sam wonders what he is typing, and as the show starts, Dolly is reading a message that was not planned, stating that she is not the angel people think she is but she is not that bad either, but she hopes she makes people happy and doesn't overdo talking about God and Jesus, since as a child she didn't care for that. The show continues, but for the TV audience it is over.
