An obstetrician who is unable to have children discovers that the baby she is about to deliver was fathered by her husband.

Dr. Monica Braden, a successful physician, is the central character in this story. Unbeknownst to her, her successful journalist husband has had an affair with one of her acquaintances, Mary Hathaway. John then embarks on an extended trip to Europe, leaving Mary pregnant. Mary is torn between her friendship for Monica and the baby she carries. Just before the baby is to be delivered, Monica finds out who the father in fact is. John has broken all ties with Mary, but Monica, who still hasn't told John about her friend's pregnancy, is prepared to leave her husband for good. Mary, who is distraught yet grateful to Monica for caring for her and her baby, is the only one who can keep the couple together.—bughouse

Husband and wife John Braden and Dr. Monica Braden are a successful New York couple, he a writer and she an obstetrician. In order to make him happy, Monica has only recently thought about the possibility of having a child of their own. Monica ultimately discovers that one of their close friends, single Mary Hathaway, is pregnant, she eventually confiding to Monica that the father is no longer in the picture which is the reason she has been so upset of late. It isn't until just before the baby is born that Monica learns that she cannot bear children, and further secretly learns the father of Mary's child is John, who had been having an affair with Mary and who does not know about the child being his. Convinced by another mutual friend, architect Anna Littlefield, to get over her personal feelings about John and Mary and the baby and do her professional duty in helping Mary, a friend, Monica continues to care for Mary as her obstetrician and care for the baby. Monica, however, has to decide what to do about her own marriage in still loving John and being somewhat sure that he still loves her.—Huggo
