Synopsis

Andy Goodrich, a 60-year-old art dealer in Los Angeles, rarely sees his family as his boutique gallery faces failure. One night, he receives a shocking call from his younger wife, Naomi, who tells him she has entered a 90-day rehabilitation program for prescription pill addiction. Angry that Andy had overlooked her struggles with substance abuse, she announces her intention to leave him and requests no further contact. Despite this, he drives to the rehab center but is denied entry.

With Naomi absent, Andy struggles to handle his nine-year-old twins, Billie and Mose, forgetting school drop-offs and arriving late the next day. He lies to the children, claiming that Naomi is visiting her mother in St. Louis, but they soon find out the truth from school friends. Andy becomes friends with Terry, a single father and part-time actor, whose husband left him three years prior.

Andy's relationship with Grace, his 36-year-old daughter from his first marriage, is strained since he was often busy with work during her upbringing, leaving her mostly in the care of her mother, Ann. He reaches out to Grace for assistance with her younger siblings, leading to more frequent communication. Grace, who is expecting her first child with her husband Pete, garners Andy's disapproval, as he doesn't think Pete is suitable for her.

Meanwhile, Andy's accountant informs him and his business partner Sai that their artists are not generating sufficient income to cover high expenses. He attempts to secure artwork from the estate of recently deceased painter Teresa Thompson through her daughter, Lola.

Over the next couple of months, Andy juggles parenting Billie and Mose, mending his relationship with Grace, and saving his business by negotiating with Lola. His ex-wife Ann and Grace both notice that Andy appears to be in a better state of mind.

After Lola initially agrees to sell her mother's art, she suddenly changes her mind, forcing Andy to shut down his gallery. He hosts a farewell party where he and Grace contemplate his future involving travel, parenting, and preparing to be a grandfather. He offers to accompany her to the doctor for her next appointment while her mother is out of town and Pete is working.

On Christmas Eve, Naomi unexpectedly returns, stating that she feels better but is still set on divorcing him. Her arrival makes Andy forget to pick up Grace for her appointment, leading her to arrive at the doctor's office via Uber. Grace unleashes years of resentment towards Andy about his absenteeism during her childhood, his unreliability, and her envy that his recent growth is benefiting her younger siblings, all while her water unexpectedly breaks weeks early.

In a hurry, Andy takes Grace to the hospital and stays with her until Pete arrives. There's a tense moment when the baby's heart rate drops, and an emergency C-section may be required, but Pete reassures Grace, and she successfully gives birth. Andy, filled with emotion, watches his grandchild's arrival, confident that she will have a wonderful father.

Grace gives birth to a healthy baby girl, and Andy cradles her while Billie and Mose look on.
