Synopsis

Sent to stay with their great-uncle over summer vacation, twin siblings Dipper and Mabel Pines have close encounters with the strange phenomena that lurks within the small Oregon community of Gravity Falls, while staying with and working for their tourist-trap-running conman great-uncle Stan. The store handyman, man-child Soos (full name Jesus) becomes their friend. Dipper finds a mysterious journal describing some of the weird things. The crew get a recurring enemy in Gideon, a "psychic" kid madly in love with Mabel, who resents him. Dipper has a crush on the older (teenager) store clerk Wendy, who is oblivious to his advances, and initially dates another teenager, the goth-y musician Robbie. Mabel has a nemesis in the ultra-rich young heiress valley girl Pacifica Northwest. Gideon summons a demon called Bill Cipher who becomes the (occasional) main antagonist. The team seizes a memory-wiping gun from a local secret society, forcefully disbanding it. Eventually Stan is revealed to have built a machine that brings his long-missing twin brother, the author of the journal, back from an alien world. Dipper who idolised the author, bonds with his new great uncle (Ford, for "Stanford", as opposed to "Stan" for "Stanley") over their mutual intelligence and nerdiness. Bill Cipher invades the world, causing a localised "Weirdmageddon", but fails to make it global and is defeated: he is tricked to enter the mind of Stan rather than Ford, who then memory-wipes his brother, destroying Bill.
