Val rescues Captain Deever and Eric Blake from a shipwreck. Eric saves Val from an octopus. Their friendship grows, unaware Val is a fugitive and Eric a detective tasked with arresting him. They get married but their pasts collide.

In the South Seas, Val Stevens and Lucille Gordon are getting married when a ship goes down offshore. Val rescues Captain Deever and passenger Eric Blake. Later Eric saves Val from an octopus. On a remote island in the South Pacific, Val Stevens (Humphrey Bogart) and Lucille Gordon (Margaret Lindsay) are being married when news of a shipwreck is received. Val rushes off to rescue the survivors, Captain Deever (Paul Graetz) and Eric Blake (Donald Woods). Once the men recover, Deever is caught by Hardy stealing money belonging to Eric, so Val orders him off the island. Meanwhile Val's pearl business is struggling as his native divers refuse to work due to the disappearance of two other divers. In an attempt to prove the waters are safe, Val dives in the spot where the others disappeared, but is attacked by a giant octopus. Eric dives in the water and kills the octopus, saving Val. Eric saves Val again when Val's head divers attempt to steal a pearl shipment before it is sent. Val offers Eric a partnership, which Eric refuses. The island's doctor, Dr. Hardy (E.E. Clive) then confronts Eric with the knowledge of the growing mutual attraction between Eric and Lucille, and that Eric is really a detective sent to arrest Val, who is wanted for murder. While Eric admits he wants Lucille to come with him, he insists he now thinks Val is innocent and won't arrest him. However, Deever returns to the island and believes Eric is the wanted man. He tells this to Val, who dismisses him, until Deever suggests that Eric is romancing Lucille. Val rushes home to confront them, where all truths will come out.—Patrick Depew
