The film is a reconstruction of sabotage against the Norwegian Hydro's heavy water plant at Vemork Rukjan. After a British operation was unsuccessful, the Norwegians were put in to prevent Hitler from getting heavy water (and thus the atomic bomb). The action (28 February 1943) was successful, but the Allies wanted to make certain, with 150 American planes bombing the factory in November 1943, after which the Germans would move the factory and the remaining heavy water to Germany, but saboteurs and Norwegian home front commandos blew up on 20 February 1944 a ferry that carried heavy water railroad tank cars across Lake Tinn in Telemark.—HK Hanson
