Synopsis

On his death-bed, Bombay-based wealthy Rai Bahadur Gulshan Rai asks his adopted daughter, Roopa (Shashikala), to maintain everyone's lifestyles as if he were alive. After his passing, everyone is notified, including village-based Dharamdas (Radhakrishan), who is being paid Rs.500/- every month to look after Rai's mentally unstable paternal nephew, Ram, for the last 15 years since he was 10 years of age.Diwan Hukumat Rai (K.N. Singh) is Gulshan's elder brother, who comes from Calcutta with his son Diwan Himmat Rai (Anoop Kumar) to manage the affairs of the estate till the will is read.

This request places Dharamdas in a predicament as he did not notify the family that Ram had accidentally passed away five years ago, so he could continue to collect the monthly allowance. He then travels to Bombay, hires a look-alike stunt-man, Kishanlal (Kishore Kumar), offers to pay him Rs.1000/- for impersonating Ram. Kishanlal knows that Dharamdas didn't tell about Ram's demise to his family members in the house. At the will reading, Gulshan has left half the estate to Ram and Half to Roopa. Roopa will receive her half upon marriage and since Ram is mad, she is also appointed guardian of his share. If any of them die, the other inherits their share. If both die, the estate will be divided equally amongst all surviving relatives. Now, Hukumat doesn't allow Ram to leave as he is plotting his next move.Kishanlal wants to leave, but Dharamdas convinces him to stay as else both will go to jail for fraud and impersonation.

Meanwhile Roopa is embarrassed as everyone's attitude towards her has become much friendlier and this embarrasses her. Kishanlal overhears Hukumat plotting with Himmat. He wants Himmat to marry Roopa to take control of her wealth. Himmat agrees despite admitting to not loving Roopa. Himmat seduces Roopa and Ram starts interfering in their interludes. Meanwhile a neighbor Meena (Kumkum) is now seducing Ram to get a handle on his part of the wealth.Film Director Bharadwaj (Brahm Bhardwaj) is invited to Roopa's birthday party by Hukumat and identifies Kishanlal as the stuntman from his films. Bharadwaj reports the matter to the police for investigation.

Kishanlal is challenged when he falls in love with Roopa but cannot reveal his true identity. Himmat is tired of Ram's interference and locks him in his room to seduce Roopa. Kishan watches from his balcony and jumps after Roopa. He is given sedatives by the doctor, in which he speaks clearly and calls for Roopa. Everyone thinks the accident has cured Ram's madness and now he is good to go. Ram pretends that he has lost his memory.Meanwhile Kishan and Dharamdas realize someone is keeping an eye on them, when Kishan's makeup appears in his room, before Dharamdas can bring it over from the shop. They reckon someone from the family is privy to their truth.Turns out that person is Hukumat who has taken Kishan's photo from the artist hire agency. Dharamdas admits that real Ram died many yrs ago. Hukumat wants Kishanlal to convince Roopa that he doesn't love her.

To convince Roopa, basically Kishan pretends to be in love with Meena. When Roopa sees this, her heart is broken. Hukumat then imprisons Kishan, Meena and Dharamdas and asks Roopa to marry Himmat. But Roopa refuses to marry Himmat. So Hukumat plans to kill Roopa so that the wealth is divided amongst the relatives. The house maid overhears this and Hukumat imprisons her with the other 3, where she asks Kishan to save Roopa. The plan is to drop a chandelier on Roopa during her annual dance performance. But, Kishan escapes captivity and arrives in time to save Roopa from the death trap laid by Hukumat. This is when police arrives (On Kishan's complaint) and arrests Hukumat for trying to kill Roopa. Hukumar complains that Kishan should be arrested for fraud and impersonation. This is when Bharadwaj steps forward and says he fished a body from the river at a shoot in the mountains 15 yrs ago. The body had life left in it and Bharadwaj brought it to Bombay and named the boy Kishan. Basically Kishan is the original Ram, whom Dharamdas thought dead all those yrs ago.. Hukumat is taken away.
