Synopsis

The painter Professor Bang has taken a holiday stay in one of Denmark's most beautiful areas. Under rather dramatic circumstances, one day he meets the young farmer's son Peter West who, to the professor's great surprise, turns out to be an excellent painter, a real natural talent. Bang wants to do something for the young man and therefore suggests that he come to his painting school in Copenhagen to learn something more. Peter is delighted, but his father farm owner West ( will not hear about it. His son is first and foremost a farmer and should not be a painter the way of life is too uncertain. If Peter wants to go to town, he must at least manage on his own, because then he will probably be cured of that kind of grilling. However, Peter follows his own head and one fine day he travels to the capital accompanied by his faithful dog "Fjols". At the main train station he meets a young Copenhagener Susan Høyer who in his naive enthusiasm tells about his future plans and his joy at seeing the big city where the colors are completely different than in the countryside. But the young girl disappears into the crowd, and Peter has no idea that this chance encounter will have an impact on his entire life. He is well received at Professor Bang's painting school and in particular the cheerful painting student Aase ( is very gracious and promises to help him adjust. A whole new life arises for Peter who soon learns that the path of art can be narrow and thorny, and that it requires hard work and work again to reach it. He settles in the idyllic neighborhood around Nicolaj square here he meets some good comrades. His neighbor is the young composer Ole Lund who shares his poor conditions with Rimonde and the swampy painter Mik who was once an excellent artist but now spends his time philosophizing about life in The artist café "Hos Nille". This is where Peter one evening sweats the girl from the main train station Susan Høyer. He has no idea that she is a journalist and has been given the task of doing an interview with a young painter. Peter answers all Susan's questions willingly and they are many, unfortunately the editorial secretary without Susan's knowledge gives the interview a set-up so that Peter laughs at the painting school, he gets furious and goes his way. There's now a hard time for him he feels knocked out and can not really get started, when suddenly an unexpected help comes from Susan's side she becomes his model. The dawning infatuation inspires him and he managed to paint exactly the picture he has long dreamed of. But there is still a long way to go, Peter is still an unknown artist and even though his mother occasionally sends him some money, it is difficult for him. There is little prospect that he can afford to arrange an exhibition. Susan's father the rich director Høyer is a passionate art collector he knows from experience that only the old painters are on course and that no one is interested in the young artists. It makes Susan decide to strike a blow for the young art and for Peter in particular she conceives a bold plan. Peter misunderstands her intention and it comes to a dramatic conflict between them. However, Susan does not let herself be deterred from carrying out her plan, it succeeded beyond all expectations and Peter wins the first major victory of his life. He not only gets a name as an artist, but also a clever little life companion, so in front of him in the future, happiness and work smile.
