Sergeant Benson (Ryan O'Neal) is a Police detective. After a series of murders in the gay community he is ordered to go undercover with a gay Police clerk named Kerwin (Sir John Hurt) as his partner. In order to be noticed, they have to be flamboyant enough to attract attention, which Benson finds rather disturbing. With the local police department being accused of sexism, and the murderer of a gay model in Los Angeles still on the loose, Chief Wilkins enlists the help of an unlikely couple to infiltrate the gay community. As a result, the macho, straight police officer, Sgt. Benson has to team up with the meek gay file clerk, Kerwin, to conduct the investigation, while posing as a couple.
