Young undefeated boxer Terry Dolan, who's been lying to his invalid mother about his career, confides to Maisie that he hates and is terrified by boxing and wants out. Not wanting to let down his best friend and manager Skeets Maguire, who has hopes of him becoming the next champion, he is reluctant to bring up the subject with him. Leaving her latest job as a taxi dancer in New York City since she believes it is hazardous to her health, kind-hearted yet streetwise vaudeville performer Maisie Ravier gets a line on a dancing gig at the Shady Lawn Hotel in Cedar Lake, located in the Adirondacks. Along her less than easy route to Cedar Lake, she meets up and coming boxer, Terry Dolan - whose stage name is Young O'Hara - and his manager, Skeets Maguire. Equally kind-hearted Terry, who is engaged to a simple yet self-absorbed young woman named Cissy Reardon, wants to help Maisie in any way he can to get her to Cedar Lake, but Skeets is less than helpful, believing a girl like Maisie is not only a distraction for Terry, but trouble, period. Skeets' sole focus is to get Terry to the championship bout four matches away, which will have been a long four year road for the pair, who treat each other like brothers. After the dancing gig doesn't pan out for her, Maisie ends up spending time with Terry, Skeets and their associates, Cissy and Terry's wheelchair-bound mother, who Terry has not told about his boxing career. During this time, Skeets changes his mind about Maisie, the two who end up falling for each other. But as the championship bout gets nearer and nearer, Terry confides his four year secret to Maisie. Maisie's advice back to Terry about his secret has the potential to ruin the relationships of all involved.—Huggo
