Fifteen years ago, Indian Sadhu Swami Shivananda had a metaphysical experience. He claims to have received instructions from God. His orders were to take up the gauntlet of Eco activism to protect the world's most sacred river - the Ganges. Clearly, this is no ordinary environmental protest. 'Satyagraha' tells the story of a group of humble Sadhus who have taken on a corrupt government, a paid off police force, and a powerful mining mafia to protect the holiness of the Ganges River. They have been threatened, beaten, jailed and bribed. Two have died. Both were murdered, or so they believe. Satyagraha follows the hunger strike of Swami Shivanand as he fights the mafia and attempts to find justice for his murdered disciple.—Anonymous
In 2011, Swami Shivanand Saraswati embarked on Satyagraha - a fast-unto-death in Haridwar, India. He fasted to coerce the local government into taking action over illegal mining on the Ganges as well as the perceived cover up of the mysterious death of his beloved disciple. This film documents his Satyagraha, the murder of Swami Nigmanand, and the plight of a dying river.—lisa sabina harney
