Five substance-abusing friends decide to fake a kidnapping in order to bribe a police constable for covering-up a hit-and-run accident.
After the passing of her mother, and the entry of a step-mother, Amrita Jayshankar retreats into herself. Her father is summoned to her school and is told that his daughter may require counseling, but he refuses to believe and instead makes a donation to the school. Then Amrita meets with three males and a female, namely Zuben, Dushant Sahu, Karan Chaudhary; and Tanya Sharma respectively. Together they live it up with drugs and alcohol until things get out of control when they accidentally kill a couple. A corrupt police constable demands Rs.25 Lakhs to eliminate their involvement. Unable to come up with so much cash, the five decide to fake a kidnapping, demand the cash from Amrita's father, and clear their respective names. Amrita accordingly goes 'missing', and her father involves the police, who assign this case to once-suspended police inspector, Arvind Mathur. With the media getting involved, Arvind begins his investigation, but will soon find it hampered - complicating not only his assignment - but also his personal life.—rAjOo ([email protected])
Amrita Jayshankar / Amy (Kalki Koechlin) is mentally disturbed and deeply affected by the attempted suicide and eventual institutionalization of her mother (Shivani Tanksale). Amy's mother Saira dies in the mental asylum. After her childhood, Amy moves to LA with her father. Amy's high school counselor says that she needs serious therapy as Amy writes her mother's name on every page of every assignment that she submits. Her father Anand (Rajit Kapoor) dismisses the suggestion and says that Amy has already had too much therapy. Anand is now married to a woman named Tara, whom Amy refuses to acknowledge as her stepmother.
Amy returns from Los Angeles to Mumbai when her father shifts his business back to India, where she meets Karan Chaudhary / KC (Gulshan Devaiya) at a party her parents forcefully take her to. KC is a pervert who has sex with his own family members.
KC introduces her to his gang - Dash (Shiv Pandit) (a waiter who is looking for thrills), Zubin (Neil Bhoopalam) (a cross-character video gamer, who is also a computer whiz kid) and Tanya (Kirti Kulhari) (who is forced to take on cheap modeling assignments by her family for the sake of money). They lead a directionless life, having fun, drinking, using drugs and driving around in a Hummer. KC is the only one in the group with family money and he funds everything. The friends are super frustrated with life and the hand that they have been dealt. KC tells Amy that their friendship is based on absolute trust on each other. For the first time in her life, Amy is part of a group where she feels that she belongs.Amy quickly figures out that Zubin has a crush on Tanya. Tanya meanwhile has a crush on KC.On one such occasion, they start racing a random car and win but, in the celebration rush, they run over two people on a scooter killing them instantly.
They quickly leave the spot but are easily traced down by a slimy cop, Inspector Malwankar (Rajkummar Rao), who demands Rupees 25 Lakhs to make the case go away. The gang does not have Rs 25 Lakhs and they have 2 days to come up with the money. They cannot sell the Hummer as it will be reported stolen by KC's parents, and they cannot steal jewelry as they already did that once.Dash tells them about a friend Shomu (Rajat Barmecha) who faked his own brother's kidnapping and extorted 20 Lakhs from his own parents. Therefore, they hatch a plot to kidnap Amy, who volunteers.
Amy's father immediately approaches Police Commissioner (Pawan Malhotra) for help. The Police Commissioner assigns an uptight cop Arvind Mathur (Rajeev Khandelwal) to solve the case unofficially as he is suspended after he had thrown a Corporator from the first floor of his own house for allegedly beating up another woman. Inspector Arvind Mathur is shown having a disturbed married life and his wife Nandini (Sheetal Menon) has just left his home to go live with her mother. Nandini later files for divorce and they have been married for less than a year.Arvind decides to pay a bribe to suppress his case, but the rottenness of the system gets to him, and he ends up beating the middleman who was supposed to suppress his case in court.
Amy's kidnapping quickly turns into a media circus. Since all the friends go missing, Arvind is forced to conclude that this is a multiple kidnapping case. Malwankar also sees the news on TV and is shocked. Arvind finds that Dash / Dushyant Sahu has been arrested in 3 different states for drugs trafficking. The friends hide at a lodge that belongs to Dash's friend. They also watch on TV that the kidnapping case has suddenly become national news. This puts pressure on the youngsters who go on a gruesome and disturbing killing spree. KC kills a man (who was also in the lodge) who attempts to sexually assault Tanya. The friends then leave the lodge in haste and hide in a decrepit theatre. The police inadvertently solve a case involving kidnapping of a German girl Claudia Jones whose description matched Amy's. The German girl was caught in an African prostitution racket.
Dash decides to use the opportunity to ask for ransom money from everyone's parents. Dash leaves to make the calls, leaving KC in charge. Tanya freaks out and convinces Zubin, who has feelings for her, to take her home. Zubin goes to bring a cab. Amy finds cocaine in Dash's satchel.Under the influence of cocaine, Amy catches Tanya on Zubin's phone and assumes that she had called the police, while she had actually called her sister. Amy acting aggressively gets into a fight with Tanya while KC intervenes and knocks Tanya to a nearby wall in anguish. When Tanya accuses him of getting all of them in trouble, she is left unconscious in a pool of her blood. Zubin discovers this and quickly flees from the spot in fright and is eventually found and arrested by the police.
Later Dash discovers the scene and escorts KC and Amy away to a church and instructs them to stay there. Meanwhile, Tanya (who was abandoned by her friends) is hospitalized after she was found by a sweeper. Zubin confesses everything to the police, and they trace down Malwankar, who was attempting to escape with his wife. In the ensuing chase, Malwankar is nearly killed in a truck collision.
While buying food, the exasperated KC sees his handicapped sister being traumatized by the media. He then calls his father and asks him for help. Using this call, the police trace the trio to the church. Upon returning to the church, KC tells the other two everything and tries to convince Amy to leave the church with him. Dash, however, confronts him, and the two get into a bloody confrontation. It ends with Dash beating KC to death. Dash then tries to get Amy to leave the church with him. However, a cocaine-fueled Amy has a traumatic flashback involving her mother trying to drown her as a child. In this frenzy, she stabs Dash, who is trying to restrain her. She is then found by Inspector Mathur.
The police finally wrap up the case declaring that all four friends were kidnapped by Dash. To save the reputation of the police force, the commissioner clears the name of Inspector Malwankar by saying that he was injured while solving the case. Inspector Arvind Mathur reunites with his wife after she returns to him.
Amy is resigned to the convent, which she always feared, albeit with her mother's name (Saira).
