Synopsis

Indian Army lawyer, Major Siddhant Chaudhary (Rahul Bose), has not only to deal with his father's death, but must also defend Captain Javed Khan. The later, charged with killing a decorated Major Virendra Singh Rathore, under various statutes of Indian laws & the Army Act, refuses to defend himself, admits to this killing, and awaits a guilt finding via a Court Martial. His Commanding officer is Brigadier Rudra Pratap Singh (Kay Kay Menon).Akash (Javed Jaffrey) has been assigned prosecutor & transferred to Kashmir. Sid insists on accompanying him, so Akash pulls strings to get Sid assigned as defense lawyer & tells him that its an open and shut case.

Sid is not interested in the case. He came to Kashmir to enjoy his time. Akash asks Sid to meet Javed & to agree on a guilty plea. For Akash this is an important case as he is being prosecutor for the first time & is super important for his career in the army.

Siddhant decides to delve deeper, much to the chagrin of his prosecutor-friend, Major Akash Kapoor (Javed Jaffrey), not realizing that he will incur the wrath of his superiors; his work will come under sharp scrutiny; the journalist, Kaavya Shastri (Minissha Lamba), assisting him will be arrested; and he may end up being transferred to violent and isolated areas in Assam and Bihar.

Kaavya prods Sid & finds that he knows nothing about the case or the accused. Sid decides to investigate the scene of crime & that means meeting area CO Rudra Pratap Singh, who is a tough as nails commander & expects his orders to be followed to the letter. RP makes it clear that in the valley, 5 seconds away from Pakistan on LOC, he is God. He is patronizing to Sid & even insults him saying that Sid is not respecting the effort behind making reality of LOC possible.

Sid gets no cooperation from RP or his men or from Javed for that matter. He can sense something is fishy & enters a plea of "Not Guilty".Charge on Javed is that on 8th Mar 2007, in a search operation in Pulwama village of Punj district, Capt Javed abetted a terrorist. When challenged by Capt Rathore, Javed shot him at close range. Several witnesses bear testimony to this fact & Javed also admits to shooting Rathore.RP recommends Rathore for a medal in a ceremony which is not attended by any of his family. Sid & Kaavya meet Rathore's wife & finds that she is disgusted with Rathore life & does not respect the many bravery medals given to him. She alludes that Rathore liked to scare people.

In court Sid starts to question all witnesses that if Javed was trying to escape, then why did he shoot only Rathore & then allow him to be arrested? The arresting officers Pasbola & Pushkar almost admit that they did not arrest Javed, but court is adjourned. Then before the next hearing RP Singh goes missing. Kaavya is arrested for being in possession of sensitive army documents pertaining to the case (which Sid had given her). Kaavya had found that Rathore & RP go back a long way & have done several postings together, in which time Rathore's powers have increased.Pushkar meets Sid in an isolated location & tells Sid that Rathore was terrorizing villagers without any evidence. Javed asked him to follow procedure, which enrages Rathore & he kills a local. He then points the gun at a young boy, at which point Javed takes him gun & shoots Rathore in presence of Pasbola & Pushkar. Pushkar refuses to attend court.

when Sid asks Javed, he says that he is quiet because he has to defend the honor of the India Army above anything else. Rathore & Javed don't matter in front of that glorious legacy & trust of the nation. Pushkar is found dead in an apparent suicide.

Sid goes public & embroils RP in the controversy. Just before the hearing, Sid receives a file from Rathore's wife who says in a letter that she is leaving town & hopes the file can help him. She also says that she doesn't believe Rathore was a brave man. In her eyes he was just cruel.

In court Sid starts by saying that on 9th Dec 1993 a Muslim servant killed RP's entire family, wife, mother & daughter. His wife & daughter was sexually assaulted before being slashed with a knife 35 times. He alludes that RP's crusades against insurgents is a disguise to hide his hatred for all Muslims, including Javed.

RP is so incensed that he admits to his hatred for Javed & all Muslims. He also admits in rage that he ordered Rathore to kill all Muslims that come in front of him.The court puts RP into custody & orders a court of inquiry against him.
