Synopsis

In the local museum in Edge City, Dr. Arthur Neuman is conducting a tour of the Norse mythology hall. According to Neuman, the mask was made by Loki, the God of Mischief, who then let it loose on Earth to wreak havoc on humanity. Those who wear it are endowed with his abilities. A stranger grows enraged and changes into Loki when Neuman brings up the fact that his father Odin imprisoned him. When Loki lifts the mask from the exhibition case and discovers it is a replica, Neuman stays to fight with him while the visitors fear and run away. He throws out the coming authorities, takes Neuman's face and places it in the case, and then leaves the museum in a fit of rage.

The actual mask is discovered in a river in Fringe City by Tim Avery's dog, Otis. Tim, who wants to become an animator, is hesitant to become a father with his wife, Tonya. Loki is lounging on a tropical island when Odin tells him to start looking for the mask again since he thinks it has caused too much trouble for humanity. When Loki begs his father for assistance, Odin responds that he must accept responsibility for his deeds. Tim transforms into a green-faced party animal with the ability to magically change his surroundings when he dons the mask for the Halloween party at his studio. Tim uses his newly acquired abilities to perform a remix of "Can not Take My Eyes Off You" when the party proves to be dull. This livens up the occasion and provides Tim's employer, Daniel Moss, with the idea for a new cartoon.

Still wearing the disguise, Tim goes back to his house that evening and has sex with Tonya. Odin is alerted when a baby is conceived and born with the same abilities as the mask. With the help of a store clerk, Odin convinces Loki that he will discover the mask if he locates the kid. Tim and their son Alvey are left behind when Tonya leaves for a work trip many months later. Now that he has been promoted, Tim tries feverishly to work on his cartoon at home, but Alvey keeps getting in the way. Tim allows Alvey to watch different cartoons on TV to gain some calm, which motivates Alvey to use his abilities to torture his father. Feeling abandoned by Tim, Otis unintentionally puts on the mask, acquires its power, and tries to get rid of Alvey, but the cunning baby stops him.

Loki tracks down Alvey and confronts Tim for the mask, leaving a path of chaos in his wake, but Alvey defends his father with his abilities. Having finally had enough of Loki, Odin, who was now in Tim's body, chastises him for his destructive behavior and takes away his abilities. Tim makes amends and becomes close to Alvey, but he is subsequently sacked after failing to impress Moss during a pitch. In an attempt to win over his father, Loki enters the Avery home covertly, performs a summoning ceremony, and begs Odin to give him back his abilities. Odin says this is his final opportunity and accepts, but only temporarily.

Alvey is abducted by Loki in return for the mask. After Tonya gets home, she goes to the exchange with Tim and Otis, to whom Tim had expressed regret for his carelessness. The party must pursue them while Tim transforms back into the Mask since Loki chooses to keep Alvey in spite of the swap. The fight that follows is evenly balanced, but Loki breaks it up and suggests that they let Alvey choose who they want to be with. Tim removes the mask and persuades his son to pick him, despite Loki's attempts to entice Alvey to him with promises of fun. Furious, Loki attempts to murder Tim, but his time is limited, and Odin shows there to chastise Loki once again for his failure. However, Tim sympathizes with Loki and tells Odin that despite their issues, they are still related. Odin and Loki make amends after Tim hands them the mask, and they go back to their homes.

After his cartoon about Otis and Alvey vying for his attention becomes popular, Tim is eventually rehired. Tonya discloses that she is pregnant once more after the Avery family attends the cartoon's premiere.
