The Sugar Wars chronicles the life of the Lonardos' the first crime family in Cleveland, Ohio. On his deathbed, Angelo Lonardo comes out of hiding at 90 years old to tell the story of the Cleveland Mafia. From Father to Son the Cleveland Mafia was risen and died.—Anonymous
Growing up in Cleveland, Angelo had a normal childhood. Growing up in the wealthy neighborhood of Shaker Heights, his father was a powerful and wealthy man due to his position as the first "Boss" of the city. After his father was murdered by a member of the rival Porello crime Family in 1929, 18 year-old Angelo swore revenge and murdered the man responsible, Salvatore "Black Sam" Todaro. Angelo was then tried and sentenced to life in prison. However, based on "lack of evidence", he was able to get a second trial and was released. He later joined the Cleveland Crime Family, eventually working his way up to underboss in 1976. After his arrest in 1983, Angelo was facing life in prison for drug charges that he claimed to be false. Fearing life behind bars he became a government informant and testified against his former colleagues and several mob figures throughout the United Stats. Angelo, together with Jimmy Fratianno, the acting boss of the Los Angeles crime family were the highest ranking mobsters to breach the vow of "omerta" becoming federal witnesses. After testifying in front of a Senate Sub Committee on Organized Crime, chaired by Senator Sam Nunn, Angelo went below ground and disappeared into the Federal Witness Protection Program. In the early 1990's, Angelo returned home to Cleveland on his deathbed. Desert Wind Studios was there to interview Angelo before he passed peacefully in his sleep. This 7 hours of footage of Angelo telling it all, is the backbone of this real life Mobster Feature Documentary & Full Length Feature Film.—Josh Mills
