Synopsis

Fugga Kumar (Vijar Verma) is a successful man in London. While accepting an award on stage, Fugga recollects his teacher's life and credits his teacher for his success. Fugga says that his father used to sell balloons and that English language stood as a barrier for success to the poor people in India.

In 1996, Patna, Anand Kumar (Hrithik Roshan) is a lower-class student who has a passion in studies and is good at it. The local minister Shriram (Pankaj Tripathi), proud of him, promises help whenever needed. Shriram says that education is the path to heaven and displays his passion for it, during a public rally.Pranav (Nandish Sandhu) is Anand's brother, and Jayanti (Sadhana Singh) is his mother.

Anand Kumar also has a friend, Supriya Singh (Mrunal Thakur), with whom he spends time, and they flirt.Anand, every weekend, goes to another city's library to solve a foreign Math journal. One day, the library manager finally catches him and says that he has no right to read there.

One staff member of the library suggests him to get featured in an article on the foreign journal, so that he becomes a permanent member of the journal and will get free subscription of the same. Anand works hard to solve problem that he had noted down before he was kicked out of the library.

Anand goes to the post-office, where his father Rajendra Prasad (Virendra Saxena) works as the head. He posts his solutions to the Math problem he had solved, to the journal. The journal is published in London and Anand had to take money from his brother to send the 55 grams letter. The postage is Rs 220, and Anand only had Rs 55. So, Rajendra takes contributions from the entire post office to send the letter.Rajendra believes that the world is going towards meritocracy and education is the path to success.

Anand then gets featured in the newspaper for solving the tough Math problem. He gets a letter from Professor Richard of Cambridge University to come there for studies. But Anand needs money to travel. He and his father go the local minister Shriram, but he denies having made any financial-aid promise to Anand. Anand and his father are thrown out of the Shriram's office.

They both further try to gather the money needed (Rajendra withdraws his entire PF but even than is not nearly enough, Rajendra's house is not in his name, they are not given an educational loan without a collateral, the neighbors refuse to help as they are dealing with their own issues) but remain helpless and get depressed. And one day, Anand's father dies of a heart attack. Anand refuses to go to Cambridge due to his father's death and financial condition. With a heavy heart Anand tells Supriya to marry someone else, as he has no future prospects and knows that he will not be able to give her a comfortable life.

Anand then sells Papads, cooked by his mother, in the city for his survival. One day, he runs into Lallan Singh (Aditya Shrivastava), an assistant of the local minister. Lallan recognizes Anand and sees the desperate condition that he is in.

Lallan takes Anand as a teacher in his coaching center, Excellence Coaching. The coaching center is also funded by Shriram, who allocates Lallan land at cheap rates and also funds his other businesses like bars and banquet halls, which are built on top of the coaching center. Anand quickly becomes the star teacher at Excellence. Lallan's business flourishes as many more students enroll with Excellence due to Anand and his popularity among the students. Anand gets financial security due to a steady and decent paying job. There is even hope that Anand might be able to marry Supriya.

There, Anand sees the plight of a boy who had to leave his studies due to poverty. He thinks that these poor kids also have a right to study. One Rickshaw puller reminds Anand that when Eklavya, a tribal, threatened to become a better archer than Arjun, Guru Drona asked Eklavya to cut his thumb, so the privileged Arjun continued to be the best Archer in the world.

Hence, Anand leaves Excellence and starts a separate tuition for poor kids, in which he enrolls 30 kids at a time. He teaches them to learn everything practically and have the concepts clear in an easy and fun way. This decision enrages Supriya, and she says that she cannot fight her father anymore, as Anand has again put his financial future in jeopardy.Raghunath (Amit Sadh) is a reporter who picks the story and publishes it through his newspaper, making Anand famous. Students include Kishore (Rahul Raj), Fugga, Kusum (Deepali Gautam) and others, who all come from marginalized backgrounds and have no hope in life.

This all enrages Lallan, whose center is facing criticism for not retaining Anand (his rich students had paid a premium to study in Anand's class and threaten to take their money back). Lallan makes a bet with Anand that he will have to shut his 30-student center if they score lower in an exam.

Purushottam (Manav Gohli) is the IAS officer assigned to design the paper. Anand's students score lower, and Anand only gets out of the bet as Purushottam's wife (who turns out to be Supriya, who married him under family pressure), stole the paper on which the bet was recorded.

Anand then realizes that his students scored less as they felt inferior in front of the English-speaking students at Excellence. So, Anand forces them to conduct a play in English in front of the Excellence center on Holi.

In course of the tuition, Anand gets immense help from his brother Pranav and mother. At one point, Pranav runs out of money to support the center, and nobody would help them. So, Anand makes a bet with Lallan that is his student defeat Lallan's students in a test, he would fund their ration for 3 months. If not, Anand will shut the center down.

Lallan and Shriram plan to have Anand killed so that his kids won't be entering IIT. Anand is hurt brutally, and us hospitalized, on verge of death. After having failed to kill Anand, Shriram orders his goon to attack the hospital and kill everyone (including the students) so that it looks like a Naxal attack, while he is being treated.Anand tells his students to then use their knowledge to defeat the goons sent by the minister. The students, in unity, use their knowledge and defeat the goons and Anand is treated successfully. The students give the IIT exam, and all 30 students pass successfully.
