Shipwrecked off the coast of Africa and marooned in the heart of the vast, unforgiving jungle, orphaned John Clayton, Jr., the infant son of Lord and Lady Greystoke, is rescued and adopted by the compassionate, childless ape-mother, Kala, who names the boy Tarzan. Reared in the bosom of his new family of gorillas, the young ape-man learns the ways of the forest and grows into an intelligent member of the simian community.
