In 1900 San Francisco, two sisters, one responsible and one flighty, deal with their love interests and the late mortgage payments of their squandering father who only wants to pursue his bungalow development project.

In 1900, the Martindale family is in dire straits, due to eccentric Hugo's spendthrift ways. His daughter Evelyn Martindale is proposed to by rich Peter Varney, but she loves the poor Julio. Kathy Martindale (Jane Withers) arrive home from boarding school and, immediately strives to save her father, Hugo Martindale (Alan Mowbray), from his wacky business schemes. She also annoys her flighty sister, Evelyn Martindale (Marjorie Weaver), when Evelyn's rich boyfriend, Peter Varney (Gig Young), turns his attention towards Kathy, even though Evelyn loves poor-boy Julio Rigo (George Reeves).
