Fangio's start had been terrible, he dropped to fifth place behind Villoresi, Farina, Ascari and Sanesi. Étancelin had failed to make it off the start-line, his Talbot-Lago failing with transmission problems. Fangio would then have a fight with Ferrari and Villoresi but he would win it and would manage to keep a good race after that. However, Fangio would have the opposite.
