Summary Azerbaijan has the good(?) fortune of being home to nearly half the mud volcanoes on Earth. This is more than a curiosity as these sometimes release considerable quantities of explosive methane as happened in Azerbaijan in 1958 and 2021. They can also cause large mud flows such as one that destroyed an Indonesian town in 2006. But they are also of interest to Mars geologists since Mars appears to have many mud volcanoes. And since methane on Earth is generally associated with bacteria they may be a good place to look for signs of life on Mars.
