Summary Recent research suggests a reason for the Late Devonian Extinction which doesn't have an obvious cause. Two cases of extended millions of years long weakening of the Earth magnetic field correspond with extinctions, one of them the Late Devonian. The researchers believe lack of a magnetic field allowed high levels of ultraviolet radiation to cause the extinction, an hypothesis supported by fossil evidence.
