Summary Red luminous nova v838 is thought to be a rare contact binary star collision. The collision occur in 2002 and since it is a very rare nearby event astronomers have been following it for the past twenty years. In 2021 they learned that the star system was actually ternary rather than binary when the nova ejecta reached the third star in the system.
