The Wrath of Rham

Summary A thief named Bill Leighton leaves an empty house, clutching a mysterious gold object. A large Newfoundland dog appears from nowhere, snatches the object and disappears again. The scene is set for another case for the detectives Rip Hilliard and Grant Logan. It is Rip's grandmother who finds the dog the next day and brings him home. She answers an advertisement in the local paper placed by a man looking for a lost Newfoundland. Leighton turns up to claim the dog but Rip smells a rat and pretends the dog has disappeared. For safekeeping, he then takes the dog to Grant's flat where his downcast partner is struggling to deal with an unexpected and enormous tax bill. Grant makes a reluctant dog-sitter until he takes the Newfoundland to the park and encounters the gorgeous Bunny Willings who has an identical, but female, dog - Daisy. With romance on his mind, Grant encourages a friendship between the two pets. Meanwhile Rip is hard at work at the library, researching the strange beetle-shaped ring he had spotted on Leighton's finger. He discovers that the ring is from the Rahm dynasty of ancient Egypt and clearly an illegal obituary of Ronald Gilson, a leading Egyptologist who lived close to the spot where his grandmother found the dog. He figures out the dog may have belonged to Gilson. Grant and Rip pay a visit to the dead man's house where they discover the empty box within which a heavy gold object must once have lain. They are interrupted in their investigations by the arrival of an estate agent and a distinguished looking Egyptian who is looking for something among the dead man's possessions. When the two detectives are discovered, they make a run for it. Rip's further researches reveal that the missing object must be the fabulous and priceless gold sceptre of Rahm and that the dog also answers to this name. Disguised as a blind man accompanied by his guide dog, Grant undertakes to reconnoitre all the antique shops specializing in Egyptian artifacts but is trapped in a phone booth as the dog is stolen from him. When an amorous Daisy turns up looking for her canine friend, Rip and Grant and the identical Newfoundland make for Gilson's house where they find Leighton. He is following Rahm around the garden digging up all of the dog's hidden treasure. Rip switches the two dogs and Rahm finally leads them to the spot where he has buried the sceptre. Leighton is captured, a new home is found for Rahm and a grateful Egyptian government show their appreciation with a sum of money that will nicely cover Grant's tax bill.
