Summary Rip's grandmother is working her way through a choice selection of junk mail competitions when her friend and rival from her theatrical days, Lorinda, shows up. Dresses in khakis and safari hat, the wealthy Lorinda is a sorry sight. Her husband, Victor, 30 years her junior, has abandoned her on their African honeymoon and taken her for everything she has got. Rip's mother Nancy invites Lorinda to stay with them until Grandmother wins the 25 million pounds she's sure is coming her way. It is a decision they all live to regret as Lorindas an opera fan whose singing voice shatters glass as a thousand paces. But Grant sees an opportunities where others, well, don't. He is unusually excited at the prospect of taking on Lorinda's case and retrieving her fortune. He knows exactly what to do. It reminds him of a plot of a one of the few TV shows he was ever allowed to grace - all he needs are a few props ... To Rip's astonishment; Grant redecorates his flat to replicate that of an old lady's. And, with the aid of inflatable parts of the anatomy, and his less than considerable thespian talents, turns him into Elsie, an elderly, rich widow. Rip is tightly skeptical, but for once Grant seems to have got it right. He lures Victor into a trap and the conman romantically courts the buxom, and very flattered, Elsie. Unfortunately, Rip is not well - partly attributable to the voodoo potions Lorinda insists he take - and cannot supervise his side-kick's activities. Grant, assiduously following his TV script, throws himself wholeheartedly into the charade. He adopts a series of ever more ludicrous disguises, and sets up his complicated scam. Victor will be persuaded into buying a racehorse supposedly sired by a famous champion. It's infallible ... However, as anybody but Grant could have foreseen, nothing goes quite according to plan. The hapless Grant, in a long white gown, finds himself as a blushing and very reluctant bride trying to push a wedding ring onto Victor's finger and saying "I do". Rip rouses himself from his sick bed and saves Grant from a fate worse than death. He sets up a brilliant, original con of is own, consisting of a cast of eccentric characters and a tilt at modern technology, which results in Victor's ignominious and public downfall. Lorinda's fortune is returned to her while Rip's family still have a few unbroken glasses in the house.
