S5.E13 ∙ Stroller Bike

This is the story of Dennis Banks, and his movement for peace. Written and directed by a young filmmaker who followed him on the Longest Walk 2, to Japan and around the U.S., the film explores the life of Nowa Cumig (Dennis' Anishinabe name) as the singer, the grandfather, the walker, the environmentalist, the peace leader. The film tells the story of his friendship with Buddhist monks, musicians and revolutionaries, their lifelong partnerships in peace and anti-nuclear walks worldwide; it tells the story of the Hopi Prophecy, and the three Longest Walks. It tells the story of those whose lives were changed by the beat of his drum; it tells the story of a people whose drum will never stop.

On any given night, approximately fourteen thousand people in the Phoenix metropolitan area are homeless. In The Road Back Home, we meet five of them and follow their stories through victories and struggles, some surprising and others tragically familiar. Their stories are woven together with poignant insights from people who work with the homeless all the time. From a police officer who leads us to a surreal camp under a bridge to Lucy, a social worker whose tireless love for the homeless is as inspiring as it is unusual, we see not only the problem, but also a way forward, and reason for hope.

When Jan Peters' girlfriend accidentally takes his wallet on a trip to foreign climes, she leaves the filmmaker standing in Frankfurt Airport without a penny to his name. The only capital he possesses is a group ticket for the public transport system. After hearing about people who supplement their inadequate incomes by 'escorting' groups of tourists across the city, Mr Peters decides to apply the same method to his own situation. The filmmaker starts a business as an 'independent travel escort' and enters an obscure world of supplementary jobs and adventurous business models.

When Roy Faamatala is declared bankrupt and struck with a heart condition, his world turns round overnight. Going from the 5 star world of Tokyo elite, he finds himself on the streets in the heart of Sydney's homeless community. Staying at one of the shelters, he follows the stories of several unique individuals, including Gabriel the reformed drug dealer, Maria the Chilean Immigrant and Krystal the daughter of an Ice Addict. Throughout Roy's investigation, the Matthew Talbot Homeless Services are the catalyst to each of the homeless clients in giving a voice and validating their stories. Roy recruits these characters and listens to their stories as he starts to uncover the many faces of homelessness...
