Ocupação Leila Khaled - Leila Khaled Occupied Building
The city of São Paulo, the main Brazilian metropolis with 12,2 million inhabitants, lives a serious housing crisis. In a neighborhood called Liberdade, in the central part of the metropolis, Palestinian refugees from Syria and previously homeless Brazilians share the 11 floors of the Leila Khaled Occupation. In this place all residents are refugees, both Brazilian and foreign. The Occupation is a space for conviviality, friendship, hope and respect for others.

Convívio - Living together
Football is the passion of Brazilians as well as Palestinian refugees living in Leila Khaled Occupation. Once a week the Arab team meets to play against Brazilians. The conviviality between people from such different cultures has caused several barriers to be overcome. New languages, cultures and religions have been incorporated by Arabs and Brazilians who share a common living space. The Arab migratory cycle in São Paulo repeats itself, as it did in the early twentieth century.

The new refugees undertake, trade, produce and sell food from their home regions, learn Brazilian Portuguese, build relationships with Brazilians, form new families. Little by little they are entering the daily routine of the country. The Brazilians who live in the Occupation seek their livelihood through the most varied activities - from sewing work done in their own building to gold trading in the city center. They all have a routine of struggle and overcoming.

Refugees as well as Brazilians seek new achievements and restart their lives every day in São Paulo. Recognizing the need to learn Portuguese, one thing is clear to the refugees: their stay in Brazil can be for a very long time. Integration is necessary and unavoidable.

Protagonismo feminino - Female protagonism
Life in the Occupation Leila Khaled is presented by the eyes of three Brazilian residents - Silmara, Márcia and Fernanda - and also by the eyes of a Palestinian refugee resident of Syrian origin: Antesaar, a seamstress woman who is the matriarch of the Occupation's Arab community. The transvestite Fernanda will marry her boyfriend Marcos and Antesaar will make her wedding dress.

Ativismo - Activism
Some of Leila Khaled Occupation's activities are presented, such as the creation of a social currency, projects for women seeking income generation and The Hip Hop Day. We live in a time of occupation and new achievements: the city spaces are being occupied, minorities are occupying new spaces, ordinary people are occupying spaces that were not allowed before. The word "Occupation" takes on new meanings.

Um lugar de passagem - A place of passage
Immigrants who passed through the Occupation and now live elsewhere tell a bit of their stories. Palestinian refugee residents and Brazilian residents see the Occupation in different ways. Brazilians fight for a permanent home. Palestinian refugees consider the building a place of passage, a place to stay for a while while resuming their lives.
