A young girl from a good family runs away from home and finds herself in the middle of easy girls of the great military port of Toulon. An honest marine officer guesses her distress and marries her.

Barry Weston is raised by his widowed mother and is, at best, a "mama's boy," and, at worst, a bit of a coward. He is drafted into the A.E.F. when World War I breaks out, and accidentally captures a nest of German snipers, and is decorated for bravery. He returns home as a hero but Vance, the town bully, challenges him to a fight but Barry refuses and the townsmen mock him and consider him a coward. His girlfriend Janet is none too impressed, either. He heads for the tall timber with suicide as his intent.

During World War I a vaudeville entertainer, Mickey, is helping to recruit officers for the army and finds himself in the service along with his female partner, who is also his girlfriend. At training camp he comes up against Top Sergeant Mulligan, who proceeds to make life miserable for him. If that wasn't enough, it turns out that Mulligan, the captain and a YMCA worker are all making a play for his girlfriend.

Nony, a shy college student, suffers severe shell shock in the Third Lebanon War. In an experimental treatment, the psychiatrist instructs his friends and family to play along with Nony's delusion that he is now a rock star named Amnon.
