Five years prior to the current story, Mana Nagase, a student, is on the Spring Festival Special Stage addressing new students while Kohei Makino watches. Later on Mana asks Makino to stay after school as she wants to ask him something. It's revealed she wants to be an idol and the she wants Makino to join Hoshimi Production with her and that she promised Shinji Saegusa, the president of Hoshimi Production, that she wouldn't join unless he hired Makino.

S1.E2 ∙ The Reason We Stand Here

Kotono Nagase runs into Sakura Kawasaki outside of the Hoshimi Production office on her way to her audition. Kotono tells Makino and Saegusa that she wants to join Hoshimi Production to become a solo idol, like her sister Mana. Makino tells her that this is a group audition, and that she should consider whether or not she wants to join the company as part of an idol group. Before the audition is over, Haruko Saeki lets Sakura into the room, assuming she was another auditionee. While singing, it is revealed that Sakura's singing sounds exactly like Mana's.

S1.E3 ∙ Everyone's Looking for the Answer

After breakfast in the company dormitory, Sakura and Kotono watch a news segment on the popular idol group LizNoir. Later that day, Kotono has lunch with her best friend Nagisa Ibuki while discussing how Kotono is getting along with the other members of Hoshimi Production. Later, Kotono goes into the office for a break to find Rio Kanzaki and Aoi Igawa, the members of LizNoir, talking to Saegusa. Rio requests Saegusa to either return to Van Production or let LizNoir transfer to Hoshimi Productions.

S1.E4 ∙ Raise the Volume More and More

Watching back footage of their lessons, the members agree to come up with a plan to improve their performances. Makino and Saegusa are discussing in the office how the group are almost ready to debut. While walking home, Makino and Mana meet Mei Hayasaka who needs help. Later, Makino tells Mana that something feels off within the group, and they visit Mei again. Mei shows Makino a girl dancing in the distance; she tells him that she is Rei Ichinose, who won a high school dance competition. Makino then asks Mei if she wants to be an idol.

Saegusa tells the members that the Next Venus Grand Prix will be returning after a three year hiatus. Both Sunny Peace and Tsuki no Tempest decide to enter the competition.

At the Next Venus Grand Prix preliminaries, Sunny Peace and Tsuki no Tempest are competing for one of sixteen spots for the final round. Later, Sakura asks Makino to accompany her to her check-up at the doctors, but they are interrupted by the other members. They tell him that LizNoir are at the studio. Rio then calls Kotono an inferior copy of Mana. Back at the dorms, the members read online posts about them. Kotono becomes upset at being compared to Mana.

At the Hoshimi dorms, Kotono tells the story of her final fight with Mana, and tells Sakura that she wants her to sing Mana's unreleased song at the Grand Prix.
