Abstract painter Renast has an exhibition coming up featuring art collector and connoisseur Tessier. He buys a set of paintings from him and the delighted painter rushes home to his beloved. But he does not find her alone. First he throws his lover, then he throws his wife down the stairs. She does not survive the fall, and the painter is sentenced to eight years in the penitentiary. There he meets the Pharisee warden, whom he unwittingly offends at their first meeting. For the warden also considers himself a painter, and Renast criticizes his kitsch paintings without knowing who their author is.
