Hyakki maru no maki sono ichi
Daigo Kagemitsu, a warrior in the Age of Civil Wars offers his soon-to-be-born baby's body to the 48 demons as a sacrifice to fulfil his ambitions and rule the land. Several years later, a warrior named Hyakkimaru saves a young child named Dororo from a band of thieves and a violent spirit.

Hyakkimaru no maki sono ni
It is revealed that Hyakkimaru is the child of Daigo Kagemitsu. Dororo insists on following Hyakkimaru, so Hyakkimaru tells Dororo the story of how he was saved as an infant by a man named Jukai-sensei, who crafted prosthetic body parts for Hyakkimaru. However, Hyakkimaru tells Dororo that only by defeating the 48 demons who possessed his body parts could he become fully human.

Bandai no maki sono ichi
Dororo decides to stay with Hyakkimaru, despite the danger of being stalked by demons. Dororo and Hyakkimaru are visted by a mysterious monster named Kanekozo at their campsite, which they track to a nearby village. After being imprisoned, they are confronted by a watery monster.

Dororo and Hyakkimaru come face to face with Tanosuke the Slaughterer, who wields a cursed sword in which a demon dwells. Hyakkimaru narrowly manages to repel Tanosuke, but the demon blade falls into Dororo's hands and begins to take control of him.

Muzanchô no maki sono ichi
Struggling to adapt to an unfamiliar world of "sound", Hyakkimaru is injured in a fight with a ghoul. He is taken in and nursed by a girl named Mio, who looks after children orphaned by war. However, after becoming aware of a demon nearby, Hyakkimaru heads out to fight it before he is fully recovered.

Hyakkimaru regained his voice in a fight with a demon, but lost his leg in the process. After returning to the run-down temple to allow his wounds to heal, he once again sets out to confront the demon. Meanwhile, Mio and the children wait at the temple but...

The spider-like ghoul Jorogumo is wounded by Hyakkimaru. To heal itself, it transforms into a woman and takes advantage of the hospitality of a young man named Yajiro. Having let Jorogumo slip through their fingers, Dororo and Hyakkimaru stop at a village where they hear rumors of a kidnapper at large.
