The Beery twins are a healthy boy and girl until strange symptoms appear in Alexis. She retreats into a jerky fog and her mouth droops. As she gets older it gets worse and worse. Brenda and Jake are thrilled when Brenda gives birth to their first child, a baby girl, Isabel, who is diagnosed with jaundice. Over the next couple of days, Isabel stops eating, becomes more lethargic and turns an alarming grey color.
