From the race start off the historic port of Saint-Tropez the fleet heads through the idyllic Iles d'Hyeres and across open sea to round the Giraglia, a rocky islet off northern Corsica, before racing to the finish in Genoa, a total distance of 242 nautical miles.

The 608-nautical mile race is a test of strategy and skill with challenging tidal currents and changeable weather. The fleet starts off the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, races out of the Solent and across the tempestuous Celtic Sea to the Fastnet Rock, before returning to the finish in Plymouth.
